Deadline looms as mayor resubmits Yonkers budget

Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone resubmitted a 2011 budget plan to the City Council today, and is calling for its immediate adoption to prevent further cuts.

School officials say the latest cuts facing the district could mean the loss of the entire pre-k program, and even busing for students, in addition to more than 160 proposed school job cuts.

Many leaders say the proposed cuts are a result of a veto by Governor Paterson that could have given the city nearly $40 million more than it had to work with.

Governor Paterson says he had to veto the money for Yonkers schools because it would have cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars that it does not have.
