Education Dept. report gives mixed grades to WC schools

The New York State Education Department has released a new report card that gives mixed grades to many Westchester schools.

The list was compiled to let educators and parents know how their children's schools are doing. Many schools have been taken off the "needs improvement" list, including Columbus Elementary School in Mount Vernon.

Rye Middle School was another school taken off the list of poor performing schools, but the entire Peekskill district was added.

Officials say schools are added to the list when student performance falters on state exams and graduation or attendance rates drop. The school then remains on the list for two years.
