Transformer explosion at Indian Point prompts partial shutdown

A transformer explosion at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant set off alarms across the facility this evening.

Officials say the transformer for unit 2 exploded around 7 p.m. prompting the shutdown of the unit.

The explosion sent smoke plumes into the sky.

Entergy officials say the explosion did not release any radiation and they stress there was no risk to residents near the facility.

There has been no word as to what caused the transformer explosion.
