Yorktown K-9 unit may be disbanded

The K-9 unit in Yorktown could soon be laid off due to a budget deficit.

Yorktown Town Supervisor Susan Siegal says the unit is underutilized and responds to too many calls from other police departments at the taxpayers? expense.

Police Officer Jason Swart, who works with the K-9 unit, says the dogs are more valuable than Siegal thinks. He says the unit has many facets of use, including tracking missing children or suspects, sniffing out drugs and stopping armed suspects.

Police department officials say it costs the department $4,000 a year for food and vet bills.
