Legislator: Russian officer turned in spies to US

A Russian legislator specializing in nationalsecurity is confirming a newspaper report that a top intelligenceofficial helped the U.S. arrest 10 Russian spies this summer.

The respected daily Kommersant on Thursday cited unidentifiedsources as identifying the Russian official only as Col.Shcherbakov, who it said headed the American section of a ForeignIntelligence Service division specializing in sleeper agents.

Gennady Gudkov, a member of the Russian parliament's nationalsecurity committee, later said "Shcherbakov turned over our agentsin the U.S.A. ... I knew of this long before the publication todayin Kommersant."Gudkov could not be reached for elaboration.
