Police union official: Yonkers shooting victim is gang leader

The president of the police union says that a man shot yesterday in Yonkers may be the leader of a local gang as police investigate whether his shooting is related to another shooting that occurred only hours later.

The first shooting happened yesterday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m. near the corner of Elm and Oak streets.

Then at around 12:30 a.m. today, cops swarmed an area of Van Cortland Park Avenue, where investigators say two men, one of which is the brother of the victim involved in the first shooting, were shot.

Police say they arrested Tyree Hughes, a reputed member of the "O" block gang and charged him with first-degree assault in connection with the second shooting.

Cops say they are beefing up their presence in the neighborhood over the weekend. They say they are still investigating, but are not having much luck because the victims are not cooperating.
