Floor collapses, 4 firefighters injured after WC blaze

Four New Rochelle firefighters are expected to recover from minor injuries after battling a blaze in a three-story home that took nearly four hours to get under control.

Investigators believe the blaze originated in the bottom floor of 43 Bayard St. around 4 a.m. yesterday, although they are still unsure of an exact cause.

One firefighter suffered a blown-out knee by the end of the ordeal, while another was hospitalized after falling through the floor.

New Rochelle Fire Chief Raymond Kiernan says that the balloon-construction of the home, which leaves pockets of air between the exterior of the home and the inner walls, likely caused the fire to burn quicker. The fire was declared under control around 7 a.m.
