City report: Yonkers firefighters abusing sick pay

A report issued by Yonkers Inspector General Dan Schorr alleges that firefighters in the Yonkers Fire Department are abusing sick time.

Under their contract, firefighters are allotted unlimited sick time, even for off-duty injuries.

Firefighters say that by being able to take time off, they don't put themselves and those who they are trying to rescue in danger.

However, the report alleges that some firefighters are attempting to abuse the system by calling out sick to work a second job or then scheduling to work overtime, thus raking in thousands of dollars without having to do any extra work.

The report recommends implementing a system to prevent those abuses and to hire a doctor to care for sick or injured firefighters.

The city is currently negotiating new contracts, but so far it says no progress has been made.
