Wayward tortoise returns to WC home after vanishing act

A Somers family is rejoicing in the safe return of one of their beloved family pets that managed to escape its Northern Westchester stomping grounds.

Hardshell, an 11-year-old desert tortoise, doesn't appear to move very fast, but the Barcia family says that impressions can be deceiving.

Hardshell, who resides primarily in the Barcia's backyard, has pulled similar escape acts almost a dozen times before, but the Barcias say they were most concerned about her recent disappearance because of the cold weather. The Barcias eventually found Hardshell back in the same spot from which she vanished, but her owner, Tommy, says that there's no way she could've come back on her own, and wants to personally thank whoever returned her.
