FBI stats show Yonkers second-safest large U.S. city

New FBI statistics released by the Yonkers police department rank Yonkers as the second safest large city in the country in 2009.

The process of determining how safe cities are takes several categories of crime into account, including violent crime (murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and assault) and property crime (burglary, larceny and auto theft).

Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone says that crime in the city is down about 5 percent, and attributes that to a shift in focus within the police department, which he says is now concentrating more on street patrols than on specialized units.
