Michael Mele is facing the various charges because of the variety of theories on how he might have killed Garza. The evidence-tampering charges suggest that Mele tampered with two carpet patches in his Town of Wallkill apartment, a floor mat in his car and Garza's own body.
Garza's remains were found in Pennsylvania last April, more than a year after her disappearance.
Garza's family, along with a Bronx victims' rights group, say they had been hoping for the day that Mele was finally charged with the crime.
