Fire ravages Yorktown home; 5 injured

An early morning fire destroyed a house in Yorktown, sending several people to the hospital.

Fire officials say flames broke out at 39-01 Gomer Court at around 5 a.m. When the first units arrived on the scene, they say the glow from the flames was so intense and the smoke so thick it was difficult for emergency responders to even see the two-family house.

According to a next-door neighbor, one of the residents ran out of the house engulfed in flames.

Five of the 10 people living at the house were taken to the hospital, two with serious burns and three with smoke inhalation. No firefighters were hurt.

Fire officials say a faulty heating system appears to be the cause of the fire.
