Village board: Resident rooster can remain at OC residence

An Orange County woman is rejoicing in a village board's recent decision to allow her to keep an unusual pet in her home after a building inspector threatened to have the animal evicted.

The Woodbury Village Board ruled this week that Sally Sanchez will be allowed to keep her feathery friend, "Roger the Rooster." "Roger" has been living with Sanchez and her other animals ever since she found him in the Bronx a few years ago.

A building inspector had noticed "Roger" on the front steps of Sanchez's home and issued a violation saying she either had to get rid of him or apply for a special variance. The board says the rooster is a domestic pet because he lives in the home and sleeps in an indoor cage.

In two public hearings before the decision, dozens of neighbors turned out in support of the rooster.
