Bitter cold causing rash of water main breaks
Yonkers officials say that a streak of bitter-cold temperatures have caused a series of water-main breaks that have left dozens without running water over the past few days.
A water-main broke on Warburton Avenue near Wood Place in Yonkers early yesterday, shutting down Warburton between Ashburton and LaMartine avenues. While yesterday's break only affected some four or five houses, city officials say that with the recent cold-snap, they have been averaging nearly one water-main break per day.
Department of Public Works Commissioner John Liszewski says that as the ground freezes, it shifts, and because some of the city's pipes are so old, this shifting causes the mains to break.
