WC budget battle rages on with another veto

Days after most of County Executive Rob Astorino's (R-Westchester) vetoes on the 2011 Westchester County budget were overridden by the County Board, a new budget battle has erupted.

Yesterday, Astorino vetoed legislation which would lower the tax levy by 2.25 percent.

Legislator Ken Jenkins (D-Westchester) said that the legislation was merely a formality and that according to county law, the tax levy must match the budget and that the veto may not be valid since it runs contrary to the county law.

Astorino's administration says it consulted with the Westchester County attorney before issuing the veto and it feels the veto will stand.

The lack of a levy may mean the county will be unable to collect taxes starting next year.
