Croton mom in 'home alone' case appears in court

A Croton-on-Hudson mother accused of leaving her teenage daughter home alone was back in court this morning on child endangerment charges.

Police say Winifred Chaffee left her 13-year-old daughter alone at their Croton home for two days while she was on a business trip in Taiwan back in March.

Chaffee insists she did leave cash, credit cards and prepared meals for the girl and that she called social services to inquire if there were guidelines about leaving children alone.

She was allegedly told that there were no specific guidelines and it was at her discretion based upon the child's maturity.

Frank Catalina, Chaffee's attorney, says the court received a glowing mental health evaluation report today about his client.

The Westchester District Attorney's Office says that any plea deal will require Chaffee to take parenting classes.

Chaffee is due back in court on June 1.
