Pilots dead after 2 small planes collide over New Hampton

Police say two pilots were killed after the single-engine planes they were flying collided mid-air over the hamlet of New Hampton this afternoon.

Officials say the planes crashed at around 3 p.m. and fell into the wooded area off of County Route 12.

Police say they believe the pilots were acquaintances. They say the two men flew from New Jersey together in one plane and picked up the second plane here in Orange County.

Route 12 was closed for hours as authorities gathered clues in the crash.

The identities of the deceased pilots have not yet been released. Officials say the accident remains under investigation.
