Cops: Driver seen swerving before fatal I-287 crash
Witnesses say that a 28-year-old Port Chester man was swerving in and out of traffic on I-287 before getting into a crash that claimed his life just before 4 a.m. today.
Authorities say Hector Rodriguez was the only victim of the crash that shut down every eastbound lane of the major highway in Purchase between exits 9 and 10, creating a nightmare for morning commuters.
Eyewitnesses told state police they saw Rodriguez swerving before he struck a guardrail, which bounced his Volkswagen Passat right into the path of a tractor-trailer. Officials say the 18-wheeler dragged the car more than 1,000 feet before the driver was able to stop.
Debris from the crash stretched nearly a fifth of a mile, with the car's engine getting knocked right out onto the roadway. EMS officials say Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.
No tickets were issued to the driver of the truck, who wasn't injured in the crash. An autopsy is being performed to see if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
