Police: 2 men charged in NYC terror plot had guns, grenade

Two U.S. residents have been formally chargedwith state terrorism counts after authorities said they plotted toblow up synagogues and purchased weapons from undercover officers.

Ahmed Ferhani and Mohamed Mamdouh werearraigned in Manhattan court Thursday. They're being held withoutbail and face life in prison if convicted.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says one of the suspects also expressed interest in bombing the Empire State Building.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the two suspects plotted to bomb a "major synagogue" in Manhattan and bought the weapons from an undercover officer prior to their arrest yesterday.

Prosecutors say the two were caught on a wiretap conspiring tobomb synagogues. They purchased weapons, including an inert handgrenade, from undercover officers in a sting.

There was no indication that the plot ever put New Yorkers indanger, and no evidence that the men had any affiliation with a terrorist organization.
