Mt. Vernon awarded for affordable housing efforts

Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young says that a recent award given to the city, lauding efforts to keep families in the city's worst neighborhoods safer, shows that the city is moving in the right direction.

The city was given the "Door Knocker" award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Officials say the Grace JTowers Housing Complex provides some 130 units of affordable housing, helping to keep city families safe.

"This award represents the fact that we're doing the right thing in Mount Vernon," Mayor Young says.

Young added that the award will serve as a catalyst to promote future projects in the area. The city is one of 14 state local governments nationwide that are getting recognition for working with affordable housing.
