Yonkers mayoral race heats up over rainy weekend

The race for Yonkers mayor is heating up, and both the Democrats and Republicans will soon be picking the candidates who will officially represent their respective parties.

Democratic state Assemblyman Mike Spano is the latest to throw his hat into the ring, announcing his campaign via Twitter over the weekend. He will square off against current City Council President Chuck Lesnick for the Democratic nod.

Former Yonkers City Council President Richard Martinelli is running for the Republican position, and will likely face City Councilman John Murtagh, who is expected to formally announce his candidacy on Wednesday.

Party leaders from both sides are expected to announce their favored candidates by the end of this week.
