Haircuts for Hope offers fresh starts, cuts in WC
In today's lightning-paced world of fast food and movies on demand, haircuts have become something of an inconvenience for some, but for others, a haircut is a luxury, and one Larchmont salon is helping to provide that luxury to those who are less fortunate in New Rochelle.
Gisele Khoury-Guerrero, of Gisele's Salon in Larchmont, began a charity collection at her business in 2009 when she heard that the food pantry at Hope Community Services in New Rochelle was running low.
Guerrero collected some 450 pounds of rice and diapers for the shelter, and when she dropped it off, she says that inspiration hit. Guerrero offered to provide free haircuts for the homeless at the shelter, and says that ever since her first client, who asked for a military cut, she was hooked. "When I asked him why don't you join the military and he said he was, that was quite emotional," Guerrero said. "It was very moving, and I made up my mind that we'd come back again.
