Hundreds protest layoffs at Yonkers School Board meeting

Hundreds of parents and teachers showed up to a Yonkers School Board meeting at Saunders High School tonight to protest the school district's plan to lay off more than 700 teachers and staff in an attempt to close a $42 million budget gap.

Under the plan, Pre-K and high school sports would be eliminated. Kindergarten and busing programs would also be reduced.

Officials say the steps are necessary to close the massive budget gap.

School board members say that through a salary freeze and a possible infusion of cash, which would amount to up to $30 million, some of the proposed cuts could be reduced.
