Group honors local students who overcame odds to learn

A local group held its 16th annual awards ceremony this week to recognize and honor local students who have overcome extreme adversity during their career as students.

The group, Student Advocacy, recognized the teens this week who have all overcome different types of obstacles in their life.

One recipient was diagnosed with Leukemia, but maintained her education while being unable to physically attend school. Another had been in homeless shelters since the fifth grade, and is now a senior in high school. A young man with autism was also honored, as well as a young woman with a learning disability which made it difficult for her to read.
