50 percent of HV man's body burned in alleged arson attack

An 18-year-old New Square man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking another man yesterday morning, who suffered third-degree burns to 50 percent of his body.

Police say 43-year-old Aron Rottenberg, a local plumber, was no stranger to local animosity in the tightly knit Hasidic community. Neighbors say that Rottenberg and his family have been targets of religious violence because they don't pray at the community's main synagogue.

According to investigators, Rottenberg was watching the surveillance cameras he installed on his home when he noticed 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer, of New Square, throw a flaming rag onto his back porch.

Rottenberg was able to fight off Spitzer, who was allegedly carrying a rag soaked with flammable liquid during the struggle.
