WC legislators still at odds over 2012 budget

Westchester County legislators have yet to approve a budget for 2012, with layoffs and a property tax increase at the center of the discussions. The proposed $1.68-billion budget put forth by County Executive Rob Astorino (R-Westchester) calls for the elimination of 210 county jobs. Astorino has said that some of the layoffs could be avoided if employees paid more of their health care premiums. Minority Leader James Maisano (R) says county Republicans would like to restore between 60-70 jobs, and are willing to continue negotiating for as long as possible to achieve that goal. Despite their differences, however, lawmakers from both parties say there will be no property tax increase for 2012, and that the budget will be balanced. A deal is expected to be reached tonight.
