Owner of dogs killed in shed fire accused of illegal breeding

Police say the owner of 16 dogs that died in an Elmsford kennel fire today was running an illegal breeding business. Officials say Ross Taylor kept the dogs in a backyard shed at his North Lawrence Avenue home. They say the fire started from space heaters and lamps placed nearby to heat the kennel. "There was no sound coming from the inside of the shed," says neighbor William Moody. "I could hear no sound at all. All I saw was firemen on my lawn. I saw the billowing smoke." Police say Taylor broke the law by keeping too many dogs at his residence, and by running a business in a residential neighborhood.

Other neighbors say Taylor took good care of the dogs, which police have described as Italian Mastiffs. They ranged in age from 5 months to 7 years.16 Italian Mastiffs killed in Elmsford shed fire
