Hartsdale man charged in elderly mother's death

Police say they've charged a man in the death of his elderly mother, who was found dead back in July in their Hartsdale home. Investigators say James Austin, 45, was his 71-year-old mother's caregiver. The two lived in the home at 300 Chatteron Parkway. According to officials, Austin did not report the death of his mother, Ida, for a long stretch of time. After he eventually called police to say she was unresponsive, officers say they arrived to find the woman's decomposing body in deplorable conditions.Police say her body was emaciated, dehydrated and covered in bed sores. The corpse was surrounded by maggots, trash and human waste. Neighbors say they're shocked at the disturbing nature of the incident. James Austin has been charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
