Peekskill priest makes pilgrimage to help Assumption School

A priest from northern Westchester is walking all the way from Peekskill to New York City.

Father John Higgins, 43, of the Assumption parish, will walk the 58 miles to St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan today and tomorrow.

Higgins says he trying to raise $105,000 to help the Assumption School, which has been hit hard by the economic downturn of the past several years.

The plan is for Father Higgins to walk the roads of some of the river towns along the Hudson on his way down to Yonkers. He plans to stay overnight at St. Joseph's Seminary, where he studied for the priesthood.

Higgins says he hopes to make it to St. Patrick's Cathedral to offer Mass at 6:30pm on Friday.

The goal of $105,000 was chosen because the school was founded 105 years ago. So far, nearly $25,000 has been pledged for the school.
