Smoking ban on outdoor Metro-North platforms takes effect

The ban on smoking on any outdoor MTA platforms takes effect today.

The ban prevents people from smoking at outdoor platforms, ticketing and boarding areas on all MTA train properties, such as Metro-North Railroad.

Those caught violating the ban face up to a $50 fine and up to 30 days in jail.

Officials say there will be a grace period for smokers to make an adjustment to the new rule. During the period, violators will only receive a warning.

Smoking in indoor MTA facilities has been banned for years.
