Civil trial in alleged Putnam Valley teacher rape begins

A federal civil trial got under way today in the case of a woman who has accused her former middle school teacher of raping her.

Laura Bliss has accused Dennis Tave of raping her after class in 2001.

Bliss also alleges that the Putnam Valley School District attempted to protect Tave and discredit her after she came forward with the allegations in 2003.

A police investigation was opened in the case, but no charges were filed in connection with the alleged rape.

Defense attorneys have said that Bliss is making the whole story up and that she is merely a troubled young woman.

While never charged with a crime, Tave did resign from his job in 2003.

Bliss is seeking $17 million from Tave and the school district.
