Officer fatally shoots hatchet-wielding man

Police say a man is dead and five White Plains police officers are in the hospital tonight following an altercation this morning. Police say they tried to apprehend Kenneth Chamberlain, 68, at a White Plains housing complex but he repeatedly tried to attack them. Officials say, at one point he was waving a hatchet at the officers and once that was retrieved, Chamberlain confronted the officers with a butcher knife.

Officials say at that point an officer shot Chamberlain twice. Chamberlain was later pronounced dead at White Plains Hospital.

Authorities say the officer that fired the shots was treated for chest pain. The four other officers are being treated for trauma.
