What age is appropriate to let children drink alcohol?

"What age, is too young to toast?"It is a question many parents face, especially around the holidays.

Many parents, such as Heike Greenberg of Upper Nyack and Barry Polaski from Poughqueag, say it is OK for someone in their late teens to drink alcohol at home with parental approval.

Other parents tell News 12 they would rather have their kids drink at home where they can monitor them and not outside the house.

However, Ruth Bowles, the executive director of the Rockland Council on Alcoholism, says drinking under the age of 21 is against the law whether in a bar or at home.

Her organization was giving out certificates of appreciation yesterday to liquor store owners who make sure they're not selling alcohol to minors.

Bowles says science shows that any child under the age of 21 is at risk for brain damage because the brain is still developing and that development can be affected by alcohol.
