People on the move across the Hudson Valley on getaway day

Today is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year across the tri-state area and Hudson Valley residents have headed out toward their destinations.

The Port Authority says more than 5 million people will use its airports, bridges, trains and more over the long holiday weekend alone. Officials say more than 1.3 million passengers will travel through Kennedy, Newark Liberty, LaGuardia and Stewart airports.

According to AAA, more than 42 million people are expected to gosomewhere for Thanksgiving this year. That's the highest number of travelers since the start of the recession.

But AAA says traveling won't be cheap. Drivers are paying about 20-percent more for gas and airline tickets are 20-percent higher than Thanksgiving last year.

With rain in the forecast, police are urging travelers to allow for extra time to get to their destination.
