Mt. Vernon officials push to rename park after Heavy D

Heavy D made Mount Vernon proud, and now his hometown is pushing for a lasting tribute to honor the late rapper.

The city wants to rename Lorraine Avenue playground located on Lorraine Avenue in his name.

It's a bare-knuckled park, with one basketball hoop, a couple of swings and a decaying mural, but it's better known as the hip-hop legend's hangout spot, fans and officials say. It was at Lorraine Avenue playground where Heavy D shot his first video for his single "Money Earnin' Mount Vernon."

Mount Vernon's city council has a couple of weeks to pass the legislation for the park. The Coucil hopes to give the area a $100,000 makeover, including a new mural dedicated to Heavy D.
