Binghamton student from Croton killed in hiking accident

Family and friends are mourning the tragic loss of 22-year-old Matthew Potel, from Croton, after he was killed in a hiking accident on Friday.

Potel, a senior at Binghamton University, was hiking with a group in the Adirondacks in upstate New York when while helping a fellow hiker cross a steep ravine, slipped and fell backward 25 feet.

Potel was an experienced climber and the president of the university's outdoor club.

Officials say the trail had only opened a week prior after Hurricane Irene made conditions on the trail too dangerous.

A memorial service will be held for Potel at Temple Israel in Westchester on Tuesday.
