Croton H.S. grad killed on hiking trip

A family from Croton-on-Hudson is mourning after their young son was killed on a hiking trip in the Adirondacks.

Matthew Potel slipped and fell 25 feet to his death when he tried to help a fellow hiker across a dangerous ravine. Potel, a seasoned climber, was leading a trip Friday when the accident happened.

Potel attended Binghamton University and graduated from Croton High School. His family says they take comfort in knowing he died doing something he was passionate about.

Services for Potel are being held tomorrow at the Temple Israel of Northern Westchester.
