Hundreds bid farewell to Croton man killed on hiking trip

Hundreds of friends and family members paid their respects today to the Croton college student who died last week on a hiking trip. Matthew Potel, 22, was on a trip in the Adirondacks when two fellow hikers got stuck crossing a ravine. Potel helped the first hiker across, but slipped and fell 25 feet when trying to assist the second. Potel was an environmental studies major at Binghamton University, and his parents have started a scholarship fund to send needy children to an outdoor leadership camp that Potel attended. Potel's father, Mark Potel, says his son was told the trails would be slippery after Tropical Storm Irene, but says he loved hiking and could not refuse the opportunity. Services were held at Temple Israel in Croton and Potel was buried at a cemetery near the family's home.Croton H.S. grad killed on hiking trip
