Gruesome details emerge on murder-suicide in Cross River

People living in the northern Westchester hamlet of Cross River are shocked to hear that a local father killed his wife and children before turning the gun on himself.

Police in Cross River say Sam Friedlander, 50, used a piece of furniture to bludgeon his wife, Amy, 46, to death in their master bedroom after what looked like a struggle.

They say Friedlander then shot his children Molly, 10, and Gregory, 8, while they were in their beds. It is not clear if the children were sleeping.

Friedlander then apparently went to the unfinished basement in the home on Lambert Ridge Road and shot himself once to the head with an unregistered shotgun.

Friends say the Friedlanders were going through a contentious divorce and that Amy was trying to evict her husband from the home.
