Man threatens to jump off Tappan Zee in the middle of evening rush

A dramatic scene unfolded on the Tappan Zee Bridge this evening during the height of evening rush as a man climbed onto the bridge and threatened to jump.

Officials say the 22-year-old unidentified man was seen smoking a cigarette while holding a knife, threatening to hurt police and himself if anyone got near him.

Police say the man climbed onto a platform under the bridge, where he began to cut himself.

The man was shot with a stun gun by police and officers carried him back up to the bridge deck, according to authorities.

Police say the man was placed under arrest and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at the Westchester County Medical Center.
