WC Medical Center nurses protest possible layoffs

Nurses at Westchester Medical Center protested possible layoffs today after the hospital's president announced the need for salary concessions. President Michael Israel said more than 600 hospital employees could be laid off by the end of the year, including 250 full-time nurses and administrative workers. "Maintain an economic package that keeps well-qualified nurses working at the medical center taking care of patients," Nurses Union President Sam Caquias said. Hospital officials said they are trying to negotiate union give-backs to avoid the cuts.
