Yonkers mayoral candidates spar over Ridge Hill scandal
Just days before voters head to the polls to pick the next mayor of Yonkers, two of the candidates have stepped up their attacks on each other.Republican candidate John Murtagh issued a scathing press release today that calls on his Democratic opponent, Mike Spano, to "come clean" about his role in the Ridge Hill development scandal. Murtagh says Spano introduced Zehy Jeries to Ridge Hill developer Forest City Ratner. Jeries, the former Yonkers GOP chairman, has past convictions for election fraud and drug violations. He was the longtime advisor to Spano's brother, former state Sen. Nick Spano.Federal prosecutors have accused Jereis of bribing Yonkers City Councilwoman Sandy Annabi to vote in favor of Ridge Hill, the $800 million development off the Thruway.
Murtagh says Mike Spano hired Jereis' wife as a legislative aid. Spano says someone else in his office hired the woman, and shot back, "The last time I checked, you don't fire an individual because her husband got in trouble." Spano calls Murtagh's claims "a complete character assassination."VIDEO: Yonkers mayoral debateMurtagh calls on Justice Dept. to regulate Yonkers electionSpano, Murtagh set to face off for Yonkers mayor
