Sinkhole from Irene shuts Briarcliff road

Traffic is being detoured in Briarcliff due to a sinkhole formed after Tropical Storm Irene.

A section of North State Road near Pleasantville Road is shut down due to the 6-foot deep hole, which stretches across the length of the road. Officials say an underground pipe broke during the storm.

The road is a well-traveled one in the town, as it leads drivers to Route 9A. Businesses in the area could suffer while repairs are made. Briarcliff police say it could take up to six months to fix due to the extent of the damage.
