Police: Body found in woods is missing Irvington woman

Police say the body found in a wooded area in Matthiessen Park yesterday is that of 84-year-old Betty Iannarelli, who went missing more than a month ago.

Iannarelli's family says they are outraged it took police so long to find her, especially because the body was found in an area that had already been checked by police officers and cadaver-sniffing dogs and was near the home Iannarelli shared with her daughter.

Police defended their actions, saying the body was so well hidden there was no way it would have been found if someone hadn't accidentally come upon it. A groundskeeper did come upon on it yesterday afternoon and contacted police after making the discovery.

Iannarelli, who suffered from Alzheimer's, was briefly spotted on surveillance video walking on Main Street in Irvington. Her family had been offering a $5,000 reward on their website for information on her disappearance.
