Yonkers mayoral race heats up as soon as primaries end

Moments after Democratic state Assemblyman Mike Spano and Republican Councilman John Murtagh both emerged from their respective three-way primaries for Yonkers mayor, the mudslinging leading up to the general election began.

Murtagh, speaking at his victory speech last night, compared his opponent and his brother, former state Sen. Nick Spano, to former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

"Between Nick and Mike they have been in office for a combined 52 years. Even Moammar Gadhafi was only in for 41," said Murtagh.

At the Spano camp, supporters were in shock over the comment. The comments even provoked one supporter to shout, "This is war!"

With the primaries decided, the two candidates will have nearly two months before voters head to the polls on Nov. 8 to make their final choice.
