Raw sewage spills into LI Sound near Mamaroneck

Boaters and beachgoers are being told to avoid contact with the Long Island Sound in the Mamaroneck area after more than 160,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into it.

The leak was discovered Monday after a pump failed at the West Basin pump station next to Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck.

Affected areas include Harbor Island Park Beach, Mamaroneck Beach, the Yacht Club and the Shores Acres club.

Boaters reported seeing a slimy film on the water.

While authorities say the pump has been repaired, health officials are awaiting the results of a water sample analysis before deciding to lift the advisory.
