Port Authority toll hikes take effect early Sunday

Starting early on Sunday morning, the Port Authority's toll rates will be rising again, with prices increasing for drivers coming into the city.

Those leaving New Jersey for Manhattan or Staten Island via the Port Authority's six Hudson River crossings will now be paying extra, especially during peak hours, when tolls jump from $8 to $12. E-ZPass users will also see an increase of $1.50. The plan calls for gradual toll increases until 2015.

Drivers on the George Washington Bridge say they're outraged, calling the decision a disgrace and an unfair decision with the economy as it is.

The Port Authority defended its decision, saying the added revenues will contribute to bridge and tunnel repairs and will create more than 100,000 jobs. However, the Automobile Association of America announced it plans to file a suit in federal court in the coming days, calling the toll increase illegal.
