Tarrytown residents urge mayor's resignation after manhole deaths

Some Tarrytown residents are calling for the mayor and village administrator to step down after two men were killed in a manhole accident last year. The victims, John Kelly and Anthony Ruggiero, were volunteer firefighters. Kelly went into a manhole to save his partner, who had collapsed inside from toxic fumes. Neither made it out alive. "Somebody's got to be held accountable for what happened," Maureen Chebetar, Kelly's sister, said. "Two men are still dead. It's not like they were injured on the job and they are back at work and everything is back to normal." Friends and family members sat in on a Village Hall meeting last night, and those who knew the firefighters say they did not have the proper training. In the wake of the incident, Department of Public Works Supervisor Scott Weaver was suspended for a year, but later reinstated.Tarrytown rules no fault in deadly manhole accident2 dead in manhole accident in Tarrytown
