NY-NJ Port Authority plans $4 toll hike next month

(AP) - The Port Authority says it plans to raise thetoll on its bridges and tunnels by $4 next month, bringing thepeak-hour cost to $12 for E-Z Pass holders.

The New York-New Jersey agency says an additional $2 increase isplanned for 2014.

The toll hike would affect such major Hudson River crossings asthe George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.

In addition, the Port Authority says it plans to raise fares onthe PATH train from $1.75 to $2.75. It says with discounts theaverage fare will be $2.

The plan has to be approved at an Aug. 19 board meeting. It issubject to veto by either state's governor.

The agency blames the recession, security costs and neededrepairs for the toll hike.
