Mount Vernon woman killed in hail of gunfire

Police are investigating a shooting last night in Mount Vernon that left one woman dead and another man injured.

Police say 27-year-old Gloria Nartley, who lived at 151 South 12th Ave., was shot in the head at around 9:30 p.m. in the area of South 12th Avenue and West Third Street.

According to police, Nartley was an innocent bystander and was hit when a gunman opened fire on two men walking down 12th Avenue.

Nartley was taken to Mount Vernon Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A man who was also shot was taken to the hospital, but his injuries were not considered serious.

"I am going to lock down South 12th Avenue," says Mayor Clinton Young. "We'll be checking cars, people coming in and out of the neighborhood. We'll be going door-to-door seeing if anyone witnessed the crime."

The killing marks Mount Vernon's fifth murder this year.
